Merzouga vs Zagora: The Quick Answer
Merzouga is the classic choice for dramatic golden dunes and overnight desert camps. Zagora is closer to Marrakech and better suited for shorter trips or travelers with limited time.
Where Are They?
Merzouga is in southeastern Morocco, approximately 560km from Marrakech (9-10 hours). It sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — the largest in Morocco, reaching up to 150 metres high.
Zagora is in the Draa Valley, about 370km from Marrakech (5-6 hours). The dunes here are smaller and less dramatic, but genuinely beautiful and far less crowded.
Dunes: Size and Scenery
- Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): Dunes up to 150m, deep orange-gold, dramatic and cinematic
- Zagora (Tinfou/Chegaga): Dunes up to 30-40m, pale gold, serene and authentic
Winner for scenery: Merzouga — the Erg Chebbi dunes are simply iconic.
Distance and Travel Time from Marrakech
- Merzouga: ~560km, 9-10 hours drive, minimum 3 days recommended
- Zagora: ~370km, 5-6 hours drive, 2 days possible

Best Time to Visit the Sahara
The best months for both are October to April, when daytime temperatures are comfortable (20-30°C). Avoid June-August when temperatures can exceed 45°C.
